VO2max Improvement and Five Key Training Methods
VO2max improvement is critical for athletes looking to enhance their aerobic capacity and overall performance. A recent study conducted by researchers John F. Moxnes and Kjell Hausken compares the effectiveness of five different training methods on VO2max enhancement. The study focuses on the impact of long slow distance running (LSD), lactate threshold running (LT), 15/15 second interval training, 4×4 minute interval training, and a fifth method referred to as “Long Quick Distance Running” (LQD). Methodology of the VO2max Improvement Study
The study tested 55 well-trained university students with an average VO2max of 54 ml/min/kg. The participants were divided into groups, each assigned a different training method. The energy expenditure was matched across all sessions to ensure fair comparison.
The training methods were:
- LSD (Long Slow Distance Running): 45 minutes at 60% of VO2max.
- LT (Lactate Threshold Running): 24.25 minutes at 80% of VO2max.
- 15/15 Interval Training: 15-second intervals at 87.5% of VO2max, followed by 15-second rest periods.
- 4×4 Minute Interval Training: 4 minutes at 87.5% of VO2max with 3-minute rest periods.
- LQD (Long Quick Distance Running): 22.17 minutes at 87.5% of VO2max without rest periods.
Results and Key Findings
The study found that the 4×4 interval training method led to the highest VO2max improvement, with an increase of 7.2%. This was followed by the 15/15 interval training, which showed a 5.5% increase in VO2max. Lactate threshold running resulted in a more modest 2.0% improvement, while long slow distance running (LSD) actually showed a slight decrease in VO2max.
The fifth method, LQD, though not part of the original four methods, showed promise in stroke volume enhancement, making it a viable alternative for competitive athletes.
Stroke Volume and Performance
In addition to VO2max improvements, the study also measured the participants’ stroke volume—a key factor in cardiovascular performance. The 4×4 interval training method showed the highest increase in stroke volume, reinforcing its superiority in boosting aerobic capacity. In contrast, LSD running did not significantly affect stroke volume, aligning with its lower impact on VO2max improvement.
